The U.S. Census Bureau indicates that the U.S.medical device
industry employed almost 346,000 workers in 2002. From 1992
through 2004, the medical device employment grew by 21 percent,
which made it one of the most rapidly expanding U.S. manufacturing
industries.
However, the base data on industry employment
does not tell the whole story. Federal employment reports do not include
specific employment totals for this industry’s substantial number of
U.S.-based suppliers of manufactured goods. Technicians and production
workers employed by these suppliers typically have very similar education
and training needs as the same types of workers in the medical device
industry.
